how gps works

Wondering how GPS works? This article sheds light on this technology for our daily use.

GPS or Global Positioning System is a satellite navigation system. How GPS works is by providing geo-location and time information to a GPS receiver.

Its signal can be received by a user anywhere on earth, where there is an unobstructed line of satellite.

Historically, the system was born out of the military during the Cold War.

It was developed and owned by the United States government and operated by the United States Air Force.

Later on, it was made freely available for public use.

In general, this technology enables us to determine the movements as well as locations of vehicles, or a person in real-time.

It is used widely for navigations in planes, ships, and land vehicles.

How GPS works?

The structure of GPS consists of three major segments.

These segments play a major role to calculate the 3-D location and the current time, hence influence how the GPS works.

how gps works

1. Space segment

The space segment involves numbers of satellites in the space. It comprises of 29 to 32 satellites circling the earth.

This structure navigates signals, store and retransmit the navigation message sent by the control segment.

These transmissions are controlled by the atomic clocks on the satellites. It is highly stable and records time precisely.

The space segment is formed by a satellite constellation with enough satellites.

2. Control segment

The control segment is composed of a master control station, ground antennas and monitor stations.

The monitor stations do its role by monitoring the satellite signals and send the information to the master control station.

Then, the master control station revises the information and sends it back to the satellites via ground antennas.

The control segment is also known as monitor station.

3. User segment

The user segment consists of the receiver or users, which receive the signals from the satellites and determine the distance between each satellite.

The receivers come in a wide variety of formats i.e. tracker devices, phones, integrated cars, and watches.

How GPS works to determine a position

The operation of this system is based on the trilateration mathematical principle. The location is determined from the distance measurements to satellites.

Four satellites are required to determine the position of the receiver on the earth.

Three satellites are necessary to trace the location, and then it is confirmed by the 4th satellite.

If the receiver is only able to get signals from three satellites, the position is still known but will be less accurate.

Usage of GPS

This technology can be utilized in several ways, such as:

  • To determine current location
  • To navigate from one location to another
  • To create digitalized map
  • To determine distance between two different points

Benefits of GPS

The system is beneficial to mankind.

  • Navigation system based on GPS satellite is an important tool for military, civil and commercial users
  • Navigation system for vehicle tracking systems can provide precise directions
  • The information is received at a very high speed
