How GPS works?
The structure of GPS consists of three major segments.
These segments play a major role to calculate the 3-D location and the current time, hence influence how the GPS works.
1. Space segment
The space segment involves numbers of satellites in the space. It comprises of 29 to 32 satellites circling the earth.
This structure navigates signals, store and retransmit the navigation message sent by the control segment.
These transmissions are controlled by the atomic clocks on the satellites. It is highly stable and records time precisely.
The space segment is formed by a satellite constellation with enough satellites.
2. Control segment
The control segment is composed of a master control station, ground antennas and monitor stations.

3. User segment
The user segment consists of the receiver or users, which receive the signals from the satellites and determine the distance between each satellite.

How GPS works to determine a position
The operation of this system is based on the trilateration mathematical principle. The location is determined from the distance measurements to satellites.
Four satellites are required to determine the position of the receiver on the earth.
Three satellites are necessary to trace the location, and then it is confirmed by the 4th satellite.
If the receiver is only able to get signals from three satellites, the position is still known but will be less accurate.
